What's going on in Open Space at MIX?

In this video, Josh Holmes points out some of the sessions being submitted to the Open Space schedule board. He also shows off the cameras we're using to record content in the Open Space area.

If you have an idea for an Open Space session, get over to the Sandbox and get it submitted on the schedule board. Just because you submit the topic, doesn't mean you need to be the expert.  

Also, remember you don't need to submit a session to use the cameras. You can record any impromptu conversation, do a quick interview or a whiteboard session in the chat areas.

First Round of Open Space Sessions

The first round of Open Space sessions are scheduled and posted to http://www.visitmix.com/openspace. There are a bunch of really great sessions in the first round.

We'll be accepting session submissions throughout the week. So if something comes up in a session or pops in your head, you can come over to the Open Space area and post it to the schedule.

Right now, here are the Open Space sessions scheduled for Wednesday:

Miguel and Joseph talk up Mono

Windows Presentation Foundation in the Real World

Featuring the European Silverlight Challenge

On Tuesday at 6pm in the Sandbox, we will be featuring three Silverlight applications that recently won the European Silverlight Challenge. The challenge was a contest put on by the International .NET Association (INETA)and the top three winners were awarded tickets to MIX.

Stop by after 6pm to see the winners demonstrate their applications and describe how they were built.

Making the Web a More Social Place

David Mandell from Me.dium will be submitting an Open Space session to discuss getting more social on the web. The description looks very interesting: 

Aside from a truckload of glad-handing and rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the business, one of the big things we look forward to doing is grabbing some stage time at Open Space.  In our never-ending quest to make the Web a more social place, we’ve got some great new ideas for  social browsing features that we’ve been working on and look forward to getting down and dirty with other developers dealing with similar challenges and opportunities.

More Topic Ideas for Open Space

You can count on there being some great sessions in Open Space at MIX. Tim Kulp sent me a link to his blog with a good idea for a session. He wants to discuss how to use the Microsoft technology stack to build applications to HHS/CMS standards. One great thing about the Open Space format is that you can find people interested in very domain-specific topics.

On the Microsoft side, The Project Astoria Team is planning to hang around the Open Space area and discuss the latest with their technology. Also, Vittorio from my team made an open offer to discuss and demo identity technologies. These are all opportunities for you, the attendee, to request topics and know that the experts are there to answer your tough questions.

David Laribee of CodeBetter.com gets that and he posted a video on qik.com about the questions and topics he wants to discuss in the Open Space area.

Eric Burke Chats About Open Space at MIX

Eric Burke presented at the last two MIX events on cool things that Yahoo! is doing with Windows Presentation Foundation and .NET technology.

This year, Eric will be hanging out in the Open Space area sharing his experiences with building applications on the .NET Framework and learning what others are doing on the rich .NET platform. Watch the video to see why Eric is excited about Open Space at MIX.

Capturing Your Creativity

In the Open Space area of the Sandbox, we will be providing plenty of ways for you to capture your creativity and give you an outlet for your ideas. For one, we're going to be lending out video cameras to attendees to do impromptu discussions and interviews in the Sandbox. We'll also have a video camera capturing the sessions going on in the Open Space Theatre. These will be posted back here on the Open Space at MIX blog. This is attendee content, captured at MIX, broadcasted to the world.

Another way we're capturing your creativity is in the whiteboards. Yes, a very low-tech way to get your ideas down in a drawing. We'll have a digital camera ready to take pictures of your whiteboard creations, clean them up with some whiteboard software and then post them to flickr.

Here's an example of a before and after shot of the whiteboard capturing process:

If you have an idea you want to express to the world, or you just finished a great whiteboard diagram in an Open Space at MIX session, then drop by the Open Space at MIX table and borrow a digital camera. We'll do the clean-up work and post the whiteboard to flickr.

RIA, REST and Keyboards

Josh Holmes shares his excitement for Open Space at MIX in this post. He also suggests some topics for Open Space sessions, including RIA, REST vs SOAP and common keyboard conventions.

These are all great topics, but you might ask yourself what  topics are allowed in the Open Space area. That's really up to you, the attendees. The Open Space area is your chance to have a voice in the conversation and discuss whats important to you. You can suggest topics on some of the MIX sessions and themes, or discuss something totally unrelated to MIX. I even heard someone suggest Battlestar Galactica as a topic. Right on!

The great thing about the Open Space format is that the attendees get to vote with their feet. If they like your topic choice, they'll show up and stay engaged in the conversation. Otherwise, there is always the freedom to move on.

So stretch your imagination and make Open Space at MIX what you want it to be.

Welcome to the Open Space at MIX blog!

Follow along at the Open Space at MIX blog to get the lastest information about:

  • Open Space sessions being held in the Sandbox at MIX.
  • Updates to the schedule as attendees post sessions to the scheduling board.
  • Videos and blog content created by attendees during Open Space sessions.
Open Space at MIX is your chance as a MIX attendee to have a voice in the conversation. You choose the topics for the Open Space sessions and facilitate the conversation. An Open Space session can be two people or twenty people. We'll give you a video camera to record the session and we'll publish the content on this blog.

A lot of people have been asking about Open Space at MIX. The most frequently asked question is how can I submit my session before MIX starts? It is not possible to submit sessions until Tuesday at 4pm when the Sandbox opens. There are a couple reasons for this restriction. One is that the scheduling is done on site using a large scheduling board. The other reason to wait for MIX is that we want the sessions to be driven by the conversations and ideas that you get at MIX. If the schedule filled up before the event even started, you wouldn't have that opportunity.

So how can you let people know about your Open Space session before the event? Write about it in your blog and we'll link to you from the Open Space blog. You can describe your session and the day/time you'll schedule it during the event. However, ask your readers to check back to your blog or the Open Space at MIX blog for updates because you can't gaurantee the time of your session.
