Molly Holzschlag, Christopher Schmitt and Donavon West have reviewed the 88 designs from 69 entrants and selected the winners.  The MIX08 winning ReStyle designs are:  the simply beautiful Gung Hay Fat Choy, the simply lovely Butterfly Effect and RedFire for the energetic, interesting color scheme and good typography.

There were so many wonderful designs submitted this year. The judges give 10 honorable mentions to the following designs:

All designs can be seen on the Restyle gallery page and at MIX on the big screen.

On a personal note, the design that amused my coworkers and I the most was Chad Scharf's Angry Teenager. It just made us laugh at the creative thought execution of this design. OMG!

Congratulations to this year's winning designs!

congratulations to the winners.  it has been an exciting competition, i really haven't felt this sort of anticipation in a long time!

i must admit that i am slightly surprised by the results.  sartr, even though the page layout is *very* similar to the starting page, i love your butterfly graphics, the footer, and the overall design.  "butterfly effect" was one of the first submissions to come in that i liked and i certainly don't mind seeing you among the winners (you were definitely top 10 for me).  "red fire", i'm sorry to say, wasn't even in my top 30... i guess the judges and i have different tastes (although i'm certainly no css "expert" -- i'm just a programmer)

there are a lot of other excellent designs that i enjoyed and respect, some are mentioned in the "honorable mention" section, some are not ("subtle", "a shot of mix08", etc).  once i finish installing wordpress, i'll write an entry talking about my restyle experience, and i'll compliment the designs that i think haven't received their proper praise.

i hope some of you found my design, mixOS, to be unique and tricky.  i was going for the "how'd he do that??" reaction -- maybe you guys are all just really good at css and are not that easily impressed Smiley.  btw, i mentioned a dancing godzilla in my writeup -- mouse over the footer if you haven't seen it yet.  doesn't dance that much but it's a fun effect and, as i said, i'm a coder not a graphics guy.

it was fun competing with all of you!  see you next year!  (will post a link to that blog entry as soon as i write it!)

Good show Nate!  I loved your mixOS restyle and it would have made it into my top three had I been a judge.  Even if you're more coder than graphics guy, it was very creative in a fun way.

I'd have to agree with you Nate. I made a post on my blog http://ian.sundermedia.com/index.php/2008/02/15/disappointed/ that I think is similar in sentiment to your comment. The first year included a community voting/commenting system that would be nice to have again. I think it would be cool to interact with the other contestants.

Overall, there were definitely some solid entries this year, and I'm looking forward to meeting any of the other contestants at MIX. The only downside is that I spent so much time on ReStyle; I didn't have time to finish my Floatzam entry.

Alright, I'm going to be 'that guy' here!

I think all of the designs should be disqualified in that this is MIX (codename: Microsoft stuff) and that NONE of those designs actually work in IE6!  I'm a huge Zen Garden fan and there are hundreds of designs there which work in all 21st century browsers.

Sorry to be that guy.  But, my design would have would have worked with one of these:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
And, been flawless in the 90.4% browers!

Maybe just before the dawn of IE8 and Firefox 3 I'm too picky!  I guess I have no grounds to complain because I didn't get my restyle in in time.

I have to agree with steven - If a design can't handle it should get disqualified, this is CSS contest not a photoshop contest. The 3 they picked did not even make my top 10

Steven, the homepage of mix08 is not IE6 compatible (it could be if this javascript have been added: http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/). So, it's normal that restylers didn't want their restyle to be IE6 compatible (so boring so play with non-standard css2 browsers).

Nate, you did an awesome work!!! Congratulations!

And of course, congratulations to winners & mentions!

Eduard

Big congrats to the winners - enjoy Vegas. Hopefully see you there as I already have my golden ticket!

There are some superb designs in there and I think I made the grave mistake of underestimating the competition. Nate - when I saw your design I almost downed tools... I thought you'd definitely have a place on the podium. For what it's worth, you were in my top three.

I must say though, although I didn't win it's made my day to have my mix graded as 'very clever'.

The Angry Teenager one was a funny concept, but was merely a takeoff of one that was already done last year by one of the winners.

Other than that, congrats to the winners. I love the Butterfly's visuals!

Hey Steven,

Me too a big fan of Zen Garden & I am CSS/photoshop guy. Have you checked Postal Mix in IE6? I had run most of the browser testing including versions/OS.

Congrates to all winners, enjoy vegas Smiley.
